Mechanical Field Engineer (AI Data Centers)

Location: Remote, USA; San Francisco office on Fremont Street. Extensive travel and extended periods at active construction and commissioning sites are required.

Salary: $217,000–$289,000 annual for Remote, USA; $255,000–$298,000 annual for San Francisco.

What you will do

• Own mechanical field engineering from construction completion through commissioning, cooling-system startup, and initial compute loading.
• Inspect central plants, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, heat exchangers, CRAHs, CDUs, liquid-cooling loops, and associated water systems against approved designs and Lambda standards.
• Verify installation quality, mechanical redundancy, isolation boundaries, safety controls, maintainability, and operational readiness.
• Review pressure testing, flushing, water treatment, balancing, equipment startup, factory and site acceptance testing, and integrated systems testing.
• Troubleshoot flow, pressure, temperature, air-removal, water-quality, equipment, and controls issues during system bring-up.
• Coordinate corrective work and turnover documentation with design engineers, contractors, vendors, commissioning agents, operations, and HPC deployment teams.

Requirements

• Significant experience delivering, commissioning, or operating mechanical systems in data centers, mission-critical facilities, central plants, or industrial environments.
• Strong understanding of hydronic systems, heat transfer, pumping, heat exchangers, heat rejection, air cooling, and liquid cooling.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, mechanical layouts, control sequences, equipment submittals, test reports, and construction documentation.
• Hands-on experience with site inspections, pressure testing, flushing, water treatment, testing and balancing, equipment startup, or commissioning.
• Understanding of mechanical redundancy, failure isolation, thermal ride-through, maintainability, construction safety, lockout/tagout, and stored-energy hazards.
• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience; willingness to travel extensively is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with hyperscale, colocation, HPC, or AI data centers.
• Experience with direct-to-chip liquid cooling, CDUs, technology cooling-water loops, or multi-megawatt GPU deployments.
• Knowledge of coolant chemistry, glycol systems, filtration, flushing, passivation, corrosion control, and materials compatibility.
• Familiarity with Level 1–5 commissioning, integrated systems testing, Procore, Bluebeam, commissioning platforms, or building-automation trend data.
• Professional Engineer licensure or commissioning and testing-and-balancing certification.
