Director, Advanced Development (Semiconductor)

Location: Wilmington, Massachusetts, United States; work includes office, laboratory, manufacturing, and customer-site environments. Up to 20% travel is required.

Salary: $193,550–$322,575 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Define and execute multi-year technology roadmaps aligned with business strategy, customer needs, and industry trends.
• Lead advanced development programs from concept through proof-of-concept, technical feasibility, commercial viability, and product transition.
• Build and lead a multidisciplinary organization of scientists, engineers, technical leaders, and project managers.
• Identify disruptive technologies, innovation opportunities, and strategic partnerships with customers, suppliers, universities, research institutions, and industry partners.
• Guide intellectual property strategy, including invention harvesting, patent portfolio growth, freedom-to-operate awareness, and competitive patent landscaping.
• Manage advanced development budgets, laboratory and capital investments, external research funding, and technology portfolios while communicating risks and opportunities to executives.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or master's degree in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, applied science, or a related technical discipline.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in technology development, product development, R&D, or advanced engineering leadership.
• Demonstrated success leading advanced technology programs from concept through commercialization and translating strategy into executable development programs.
• Experience with product development processes, technology readiness levels, innovation management, structured problem-solving, and root cause analysis methods such as 8D, Kepner-Tregoe, and fault tree analysis.
• Experience building multidisciplinary technical teams, managing budgets and investment priorities, and communicating with executives and stakeholders.
• Ability to work in office, laboratory, manufacturing, and customer-site environments while following safety and PPE requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience in semiconductor capital equipment, plasma technologies, gas analysis, contamination control, particle metrology, vacuum systems, microwave power systems, process instrumentation, or advanced manufacturing.
• Knowledge of semiconductor technology roadmaps, future process inflections, and adjacent growth opportunities.
• Experience with university partnerships, government-funded research, industry consortiums, strategic alliances, patent intelligence, or technology scouting.
• Practical experience using AI-enabled tools for technology scouting, technical analysis, engineering productivity, knowledge management, or data-informed decision-making.
