Senior Software Engineering Manager (Search)

Location: Must be based in Chicago, IL, Peoria, IL, or Dallas, TX, United States. The role requires up to 10% travel.

Salary: $147,760–$240,110 per year

What you will do

• Set the long-term technical vision and architecture for scalable, high-performance search platforms.
• Build search solutions for website content and integrate them across platforms, systems, web, and mobile applications.
• Recruit, manage, and mentor one or more software engineering teams.
• Introduce NLP, vector search, personalization, machine learning, and analytics to improve search relevance.
• Define KPIs such as CTR, query distribution, and zero-search rates, and continuously improve search performance.
• Partner with product managers, data scientists, and engineering leaders while overseeing software quality and reliable IT service operations.

Requirements

• Strong experience as a software engineering manager, software architecture manager, or software product manager managing 10 or more team members.
• Experience with search products such as OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Solr, Lucene, Coveo, or LucidWorks Fusion.
• Strong expertise in headless frameworks, web and mobile integrations, crawlers, and web information parsing.
• Proficiency in Java, Python, or Scala, including source control practices.
• Experience with software architecture, integration engineering, SDLC, quality assurance, testing, and IT service management.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI code generation tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, or GitHub Copilot.
• Familiarity with DevOps and cloud deployment tools.
• Experience applying machine learning and A/B testing to improve search relevance.
• Experience building low-latency APIs in AWS using memory-storage solutions.
