Director Government Affairs (Energy): Leading federal government affairs and advocacy strategies for an energy and utility company with an accent on regulatory monitoring, executive engagement, and stakeholder relationships. Focus on representing AEP before federal agencies, analyzing policy impacts, coordinating executive meetings, and developing briefings and advocacy materials.

Location: On-site in the AEP Washington, DC office

Salary: $160,434.00–$208,565.50 annually, plus annual bonus and long-term incentive.

What you will do

  • Represent AEP before federal agencies and Administration officials on legislative, regulatory, and policy matters.
  • Develop and execute federal advocacy strategies aligned with company objectives.
  • Build relationships with policymakers, trade associations, coalitions, consultants, and other external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate meetings between AEP executives and federal policymakers and support participation in industry events.
  • Monitor federal initiatives, agency actions, and rulemakings, analyzing potential business impacts.
  • Prepare executive briefings, talking points, legislative summaries, and advocacy documents while maintaining lobbying and ethics compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, public relations, communications, business, law, or a related discipline.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience, or at least 6 years of experience with Congress or the federal government.
  • Experience in the energy and utility sectors, including familiarity with energy, environmental, permitting, and infrastructure issues.
  • Strong understanding of federal legislative and executive branch decision-making processes.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and strategic relationship-building skills.
  • Must work on-site in Washington, DC.
