TL;DR
Development Test Engineer (Aerospace) (mechanical and spacecraft systems): Designing and executing development tests for structural, thermal, fluid, dynamic, and electromechanical satellite systems with an accent on test hardware, fixturing, instrumentation, and hands-on flight hardware validation. Focus on building test setups, troubleshooting performance issues, analyzing test data, and leading multidisciplinary campaigns for production and qualification testing.

Location: Los Angeles, California, United States. The role involves access to ITAR-controlled information and items; the hire must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export-control license.

Salary: $100,000–$140,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Own development tests from kickoff and test-setup design through fabrication, operation, data collection, and final results.
  • Design test hardware, fixtures, and tooling using CAD, FEA, and hand calculations.
  • Activate test stands, operate equipment, instrument systems, and execute tests safely and systematically.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues and recommend solutions during test campaigns.
  • Communicate technical data, findings, and recommendations across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Improve test standards by creating new tools, methods, and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years of industry experience in mechanical, structural, and/or electromechanical design and analysis.
  • Experience with CAD or FEA software.
  • Experience designing, building, and testing mechanical assemblies and test fixtures for aerospace or terrestrial applications.
  • Hands-on fabrication experience.
  • Must be a U.S. person under ITAR or otherwise eligible for a federally issued export-control license.

Nice to have

  • Experience with data acquisition, controls, dedicated test equipment, vibration tables, or environmental data loggers.
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T, NX, Teamcenter PLM, or structural-analysis tools such as Simcenter 3D, Femap, or Hypermesh.
  • Programming experience with Python, MATLAB, Simulink, C++, R, or LabVIEW.
  • Experience owning mechanical hardware or systems in integrated engineering projects such as CubeSats, robotics, rocketry, or motorsports.
  • Understanding of structural analysis and failure modes of complex mechanical systems in space environments.
