Staff Software Engineer, Search (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid policy requires staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time

What you will do

• Build the search platform from scratch with engineers and researchers.
• Design and implement scalable search systems for Claude's information access and retrieval.
• Establish metrics and tooling to measure and improve search quality.
• Enhance search algorithms and indexing mechanisms to improve accuracy and efficiency.
• Process high-volume data through distributed architectures.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building complex distributed systems in production.
• Strong understanding of search fundamentals, including indexing, retrieval, and ranking.
• Strong coding skills in Python, Go, Java, or similar languages.
• Hands-on experience with high-volume data processing architectures.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, and experience in a relevant field.
• Ability to work from San Francisco or New York City and attend an office at least 25% of the time.
