TL;DR
Academic Advisor II (Academic Advising and Student Success): Advising undergraduate students on academic goals, degree requirements, course selection, and university processes with an accent on student retention, progression monitoring, and connecting students with campus resources. Focus on building student relationships, identifying high-risk indicators, delivering retention initiatives, and supporting advising programs through data review and training.

What you will do

  • Advise undergraduate students on academic goals, majors, minors, course selection, degree requirements, and career or further education options.
  • Explain and support academic processes including registration, add/drop, withdrawals, curriculum changes, transfer credits, and exception requests.
  • Review academic records, monitor student progression, identify high-risk indicators, and provide intervention and guidance to support retention.
  • Connect students with academic, career, health, wellness, counseling, disability, and other campus resources.
  • Plan and deliver advising, student success, retention events, academic campaigns, and outreach activities.
  • Maintain advising records, support training for staff and student workers, and participate in professional development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of advising or related experience.
  • Knowledge of academic advising theories, models, strategies, professional standards, ethics, curricula, degree programs, and student success resources.
  • Ability to build relationships, guide and coach students, facilitate goal setting and problem-solving, and communicate respectfully and confidentially.
  • Ability to review academic data, use advising technologies, identify student success trends, and prepare reports for advising initiatives.
  • Ability to multitask, collaborate with others, supervise student employees, and develop or deliver training.
  • Work is based in College Station, Texas.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of Texas A&M University’s history, mission, policies, procedures, culture, and advising practices.
  • Knowledge of privacy regulations, confidentiality, legal guidelines, mental health resources, and the needs of diverse student populations.
  • Experience organizing professional development or delivering training in academic advising.
