TL;DR
Excess Workers' Compensation, Senior Underwriter (Insurance): Underwriting and servicing large excess workers’ compensation accounts while evaluating complex risks, structuring programs, pricing coverage, and developing broker and client relationships with an accent on analytical underwriting, loss analysis, and business development. Focus on negotiating terms, managing new and renewal opportunities, collaborating across claims, actuarial, legal, and loss prevention teams, and spending approximately 40% of the time outside the office.

Location: Hybrid schedule with a minimum of 3 days per week in the Chicago, Illinois office. Approximately 40% of the role is spent outside the office meeting clients, brokers, and risk management professionals. Applicants must already be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Salary: $101,500–$131,000 base salary annually, plus potential bonus and incentive awards.

What you will do

  • Underwrite new and renewal large excess workers’ compensation and group or association accounts.
  • Analyze claim data, loss trends, actuarial information, workers’ compensation benefits, financial information, and operational exposures.
  • Develop program structures, pricing, coverage terms, and conditions within underwriting authority.
  • Negotiate coverage, premiums, terms, and conditions with brokers and insureds.
  • Build broker and client relationships, solicit new business, develop the opportunity pipeline, and support renewals.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, business development, claims, loss prevention, legal, and actuarial teams while supporting less-experienced underwriters.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience underwriting large workers’ compensation accounts.
  • Experience underwriting large excess workers’ compensation and group or association accounts.
  • Regional or local market knowledge of brokers and accounts.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, prioritization, written, and verbal communication skills, with a strong marketing background.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word; ability to work independently and follow underwriting guidelines.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, or sufficient underwriting experience; U.S. work authorization without sponsorship required.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration with a major in insurance, accounting, finance, marketing, or a related field.
  • CPCU or another relevant professional designation.
