Salary: $23.00–$25.50 per hour, plus a cell phone stipend

What you will do

• Write an average of two clear, concise, and engaging news stories per day.
• Cover breaking news, local crime, emergencies, court cases, and community issues.
• Generate, develop, and pitch original story ideas while contributing to editorial planning.
• Build and maintain relationships with key sources.
• Travel within Santa Cruz County for reporting assignments.
• Collaborate with the newsroom team.

Requirements

• Strong English writing and communication skills with knowledge of AP Style.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Availability for shift work, including coverage outside normal business hours.
• Must be willing to complete and pass a pre-employment background check and motor vehicle record check.

Nice to have

• Experience working for a daily newspaper.
• Understanding of SEO and WordPress.
• Strong writing samples and a cover letter.
