Engineering Manager (AI/Data)

Location: Portugal; fully remote with occasional required visits to the Bristol or London office

What you will do

• Lead, develop, coach, and retain a team of software engineers.
• Own delivery across requirements, technical design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Partner with Product, AI/ML, Data, DevOps, and business stakeholders to translate strategy into engineering priorities.
• Guide architecture for scalable backend services, APIs, distributed systems, and data processing.
• Drive quality, reliability, security, performance, observability, CI/CD, monitoring, and production readiness.
• Recruit and onboard engineers while building an inclusive, accountable culture of ownership and continuous learning.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience, including experience leading or managing software engineers.
• Experience operating production software and managing the full software development lifecycle.
• Strong foundation in backend development, APIs, distributed systems, cloud architectures, software quality, testing, CI/CD, observability, and reliability.
• Working knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure and experience with Agile methodologies.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, decision-making, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
