Lead Applied AI Engineer (AI)

Location: McLean, Virginia, United States; this position requires working in the office 5 days a week.

Base salary: $150,000–$300,000 USD per year, plus a discretionary performance bonus.

What you will do

• Architect, build, and optimize production AI systems for enterprise application understanding and automation.
• Design reliable agents and orchestration covering planning, tool use, memory, state, and permission-aware boundaries.
• Extract requirements and executable specifications from source code, metadata, tests, and runtime behavior.
• Build semantic and dependency models plus retrieval systems that provide accurate context across large application estates.
• Develop evaluation and CI pipelines that validate quality and detect regressions.
• Improve reliability, latency, efficiency, and scale while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a related technical or analytical discipline.
• 7+ years of relevant software development experience with a bachelor’s degree, or 5+ years with a master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Strong background in distributed systems, including retries, idempotency, partial failure, long-running tasks, and recovery.
• Strong software engineering, data pipeline, and observability skills, with experience owning production services end to end.
• Experience using AI coding assistants and evaluating, coaching others on, and selectively applying AI-generated code in production.
• Ability to communicate complex technical architectures verbally, visually, and in writing to diverse engineering audiences.

Nice to have

• Expertise in code search, repository intelligence, or developer tools.
• Experience with legacy codebases and workflow modernization.
• Experience with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce or ServiceNow.
