Research Engineer (AI)

Location: Must be based in San Francisco, London, or New York

What you will do

• Design and operate large-scale multilingual data pipelines, including sourcing, cleaning, and normalization.
• Define and enforce quality standards for multilingual corpora, covering cultural fidelity and toxicity.
• Conduct scientific experiments to improve multilingual data efficiency for large language models.
• Build evaluation sets and diagnostics to identify and address model performance gaps across languages.
• Collaborate with pre-training and post-training teams to deliver measurable improvements in model capabilities.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with experience processing web-scale datasets in distributed environments.
• Proven experience building large-scale data pipelines for LLMs, machine translation, or search.
• Fluency or working proficiency in at least one language other than English.
• Rigorous, measurement-first mindset with the ability to prove data-driven improvements.
• Ability to navigate trade-offs between research objectives and practical engineering realities.

Nice to have

• Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Published work in multilingual NLP, low-resource languages, or evaluation methodology.
• Experience with annotation vendor management or crowdsourced data operations at scale.
• Familiarity with tokenizer design and its effects on non-Latin scripts.
