TL;DR
Hardware Engineering Intern (Autonomous Systems) (Robotics/Embedded Hardware): Supporting the design, integration, characterization, and validation of autonomy hardware for autonomous construction equipment with an accent on sensing, embedded compute, and physical-world system testing. What you will do

  • Support the design, characterization, integration, and validation of autonomy hardware and related systems under senior engineer guidance.
  • Assist with component evaluations for autonomous hardware platforms.
  • Write sensor data-analysis and test-automation scripts in Python, C/C++, or Rust.
  • Run tests, collect data, and document results for the engineering team.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field at the University of Waterloo.
  • Foundational knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and embedded software engineering.
  • Experience with circuits, signals, basic mechanical design, and hardware integration.
  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++, or Rust for testing, data collection, or analysis.
  • Comfort working in a lab with tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and soldering irons.

Nice to have

  • Experience with embedded compute platforms, including Nvidia Jetson devices.
  • Knowledge of lidar, cameras, radar, GNSS, or IMUs.
  • Experience with CAN, UART, SPI, RS232/422/485, or Ethernet.
  • Hardware or embedded-systems experience from co-op terms, personal projects, or robotics clubs.
  • Familiarity with PCB design, schematic-capture tools, Git, construction equipment, or autonomous systems.
