Senior Counsel (AI)

Location: San Francisco office, onsite 5 days a week

Salary: $200,000–$400,000 per year, plus equity and competitive benefits

What you will do

• Build the company's legal foundation as its first in-house lawyer.
• Lead contract negotiations involving AI security, interpretability, licensing, data rights, liability, and forward-deployed work.
• Manage employment agreements, fundraising matters, board matters, and other company-wide legal needs.
• Define approaches to emerging AI regulations and contracts in areas with limited established precedent.
• Own legal decisions and execution independently as the sole in-house counsel.

Requirements

• JD and active membership in at least one US state bar; California admission is preferred.
• At least 6 years of experience across law firm and in-house roles at technology companies.
• Experience leading enterprise software deals.
• Strong judgment and experience with AI/SaaS licensing, data rights, liability, and forward-deployed contracts.
• Strong understanding of AI, particularly AI security and interpretability.
• Willingness to handle all legal matters directly, including routine work.

Nice to have

• Experience building a legal function from scratch.
• AI lab or AI/ML product experience, including model licensing, training data rights, or open-source releases.
• Experience working with healthcare or life sciences customers and related regulations.
