Commercial and Product Legal Counsel (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; onsite. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $301,000–$324,000 per year, plus eligibility for up to $50,000 in semi-annual performance bonuses, totaling up to $100,000 annually. Competitive equity is also offered.

What you will do

• Negotiate enterprise customer agreements, data-licensing deals, vendor contracts, and partnership agreements from start to finish.
• Partner directly with sales and business development during active negotiations.
• Advise product and engineering on data access, privacy, artificial intelligence, intellectual property, and related regulatory questions.
• Handle novel matters involving AI-generated output ownership, data permissioning, licensing structures, and infrastructure liability.
• Build contracting templates, playbooks, fallback positions, approval thresholds, compliance programs, and other scalable legal processes.
• Determine when outside counsel is needed and manage those relationships.

Requirements

• 5–8 years of sophisticated commercial, technology, or product counseling experience.
• Demonstrated experience negotiating technology agreements directly with counterparties and their counsel.
• Ability to independently own matters, exercise judgment, escalate appropriately, and drive work to completion.
• Strong business judgment and ability to provide clear, actionable risk recommendations to engineers, salespeople, and other non-lawyers.
• Heavy existing use of AI in legal practice and interest in extending AI-supported legal work.
• Membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar and legal authorization to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• J.D. from a T14 law school or comparable academic credentials.
• Experience at an Am Law 100 or similarly sophisticated firm.
• Exposure to data licensing, privacy, intellectual property, or data-access matters.
