TL;DR
Senior Data Scientist (AI) (Outage & Extreme Weather): Building and operationalizing machine learning and statistical models that predict weather-driven transmission and distribution outages, infrastructure failures, and wildfire ignition risk with an accent on spatio-temporal modeling, physics-based approaches, and real-time forecasting. Focus on integrating weather, asset, outage, and geospatial data, validating uncertainty-aware models, and deploying production systems for utility decision-making during extreme weather events.

Location: Denver, Colorado (Remote); role is limited to the United States

Company

Develops wildfire and extreme weather risk mitigation software using AI and machine learning for electric utilities, insurers, and government agencies.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and validate machine learning and statistical models for transmission and distribution outage prediction during extreme weather.
  • Build spatio-temporal models linking weather forecasts, infrastructure assets, failure probabilities, and wildfire ignition risk.
  • Integrate weather model outputs, infrastructure data, historical outage records, and geospatial layers into reproducible modeling pipelines.
  • Operationalize research-grade models into fast, reliable production systems for real-time forecasting.
  • Benchmark model performance and communicate accuracy, skill, and uncertainty to internal teams and utility customers.
  • Collaborate with meteorologists, risk modelers, and software engineers while using AI agents for prototyping, testing, documentation, and pipeline development.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience developing transmission outage prediction models.
  • 5+ years of academic or industry experience applying statistical modeling and machine learning to grid reliability, storm outage prediction, or related energy-sector problems.
  • Ph.D. in environmental engineering, atmospheric science, civil engineering, statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field preferred; a master’s degree with substantial relevant experience is also considered.
  • Strong knowledge of ensemble methods, neural networks, probabilistic models, spatio-temporal modeling, and physics-based infrastructure failure modeling.
  • Proficiency with geospatial data, GeoPandas, ArcGIS or equivalent tools, large multidimensional weather datasets, and advanced Python with NumPy, Pandas, and Scikit-learn.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic coding tools and the ability to review AI-generated code for scientific correctness.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, or grid operators on weather-related operational forecasting.
  • Peer-reviewed publications, patents, or deployed production models in outage prediction, wildfire risk, or extreme weather impacts.
  • Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, R, SQL, or Julia.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work remotely within the United States.
  • Collaborate across atmospheric science, power systems, machine learning, risk modeling, and software engineering.
  • Build products used by utilities to anticipate outages, position crews, and manage grid risk during storms, extreme winds, and wildfire conditions.
