Chief Mechanical Engineer (Rail + Transit)

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; hybrid work arrangement

Salary: $175,000–$230,000 annually

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design for HVAC, tunnel ventilation, and supporting building systems across transit stations, tunnels, and rail facilities.
• Act as the technical authority for elevators, vertical transportation, and station accessibility systems.
• Manage design packages from concept through final design, including drawings, specifications, engineering reports, calculations, airflow modeling, and system sizing.
• Ensure compliance with NFPA, ASHRAE, NYC Building Code, and transit authority requirements.
• Coordinate with architectural, structural, electrical, fire/life safety, and systems disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
• Provide project management leadership, client coordination, design review, QA/QC oversight, and mentorship for mechanical engineering staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
• 15+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally in rail, transit, or complex facility environments.
• Deep expertise in HVAC and tunnel ventilation design for underground or enclosed infrastructure.
• Experience supporting or leading elevator and vertical transportation design for station or facility projects.
• Strong knowledge of engineering standards, life safety requirements, and transit agency design criteria.
• Proven ability to lead technical teams, manage major capital infrastructure deliverables, communicate with clients, and coordinate with agencies such as MTA, Amtrak, and WMATA. PE license is strongly preferred.
