Software Engineering Manager - Hands-On & Product-Focused (AI)

What you will do

• Lead and develop a team of two engineers while contributing hands-on to the codebase.
• Own a substantial part of the Close product from discovery and implementation through delivery.
• Speak directly with customers and accountants, run discovery sessions, and demo working product capabilities.
• Build AI workflows that automate accounting reconciliation across payroll, invoices, expenses, deferred amounts, and related financial data.
• Investigate accounting processes across US and European operations and identify opportunities to reduce manual cross-referencing.
• Represent progress to stakeholders and help define operating practices for a small autonomous AI-native team.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on engineering ability with experience writing code and building AI workflows.
• People-management or team-leadership experience, including coaching and developing engineers.
• High autonomy and comfort making decisions with incomplete information and minimal handoffs.
• Product sense and confidence speaking with customers, running discovery, and demoing work live.
• Hands-on enthusiasm for using AI as a core part of product development.
• Willingness to learn accounting processes, including payroll, reconciliation, and regional differences, with a bias toward incremental delivery.

• Experience building a product or team from scratch.
• Previous engineering manager or small-team tech-lead experience.
• Accounting, bookkeeping, or fintech experience.
• Experience working with customers, onboarding, or sales functions.
• Recent hands-on experimentation with AI coding and workflow tools.
