TL;DR
Propulsion Engineer II - Hardware and Bus Systems (Aerospace): Designing, analyzing, testing, and operating spacecraft propulsion hardware and fluid-system components for Varda’s satellite buses with an accent on propulsion architecture, component sizing, mechanical design, and system-level documentation. Focus on building analysis automation in Python, performing structural analysis, executing subsystem tests, and supporting in-flight operations and anomaly resolution.

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, United States

Salary: $119,543–$152,749 per year, plus potential stock options and/or long-term cash awards

What you will do

  • Own and maintain propulsion subsystem technical baselines, P&IDs, system architecture, and related documentation.
  • Design, analyze, build, and test spacecraft propulsion flight hardware, fluid-system components, and satellite bus propulsion systems.
  • Support propulsion system upgrades for operational vehicles and define requirements, architectures, roadmaps, and milestones for future vehicles.
  • Generate propulsion performance analyses, propellant budgets, pressure ladders, component sizing, and structural and thermal limit assessments for cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Develop Python scripts and spreadsheet tools for recurring analysis and test-data review workflows.
  • Support mechanical design, FEA, subsystem testing, in-flight operations, nonconformance disposition, and anomaly investigations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on propulsion or fluid-systems design, build, and/or test experience for spacecraft or launch vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of pressurized components, tubing, fittings, seals, valves, instrumentation, and P&IDs.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX, and PLM software.
  • Experience authoring or executing ground-test or flight operational procedures and driving technical tasks to resolution.
  • Must work on-site in El Segundo, California, and must be authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. person for access to export-controlled technology.

Nice to have

  • Experience with satellite bus propulsion architectures, including monopropellant, bipropellant, or cold-gas systems.
  • Python or spreadsheet automation for propulsion analysis and data review.
  • Structural analysis using ANSYS, NASTRAN, or equivalent FEA tools.
  • Experience with GD&T, spacecraft-grade propellants, 1D fluid modeling, test campaigns, launch sites, or in-flight operations.
  • Strong technical communication skills for work instructions, engineering specifications, and engineering memos.
