Lead Data Engineer (Healthcare Interoperability)

What you will do

• Design and maintain scalable, secure Azure data architectures for analytics, business intelligence, and operational systems.
• Build data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure storage, and related services.
• Develop and optimize databases, stored procedures, data models, indexes, queries, and database DevOps processes across SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, and CosmosDB.
• Build event-driven processing solutions and REST APIs with Python, FastAPI/Flask, Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Container Apps, and Functions.
• Integrate healthcare data from EHR systems and external APIs using FHIR, C-CDA, and HL7 standards.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, architecture guidance, documentation, incident support, and continuous improvements to data quality and platform reliability.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in data engineering, database development, or related roles.
• Expert proficiency in T-SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Python, including REST APIs and background workers with FastAPI or Flask.
• Strong experience with Azure data services, data pipelines, ETL/ELT, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and database design.
• Knowledge of Power BI, DAX, data modeling, performance optimization, Git, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code with Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates.
• Experience with HIPAA/HITRUST compliance, data governance, metadata management, and regulated healthcare data is required or strongly relevant.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice to have

• Practical experience with FHIR resources, OAuth2/SMART on FHIR, C-CDA, and HL7 v2 message handling.
• Experience integrating with Epic, Cerner, Athena, or other EHR/EMR systems.
• OpenAPI/Swagger design, contract testing, document templating, and HTML-to-PDF rendering experience.
• Azure API Management, private networking, PowerShell, Azure DevOps, and advanced AI development tooling.
