TL;DR
Systems Engineer (Robotaxi) (Autonomous Driving): Designing and integrating safe, scalable driver-out Robotaxi systems across vehicle platforms, ADS, sensors, compute, safety mechanisms, remote assistance, fleet services, and cloud operations with an accent on system requirements, interfaces, and partner boundaries. Focus on defining verification-ready architecture, leading technical discussions with OEMs and Tier1s, and solving degraded-operation, functional-safety, and vehicle-integration challenges.

Location: Sunnyvale, California, USA; hybrid work with time in offices and workshops and time working from home

Salary: $209,700–$311,400 per year, plus a competitive equity package

What you will do

  • Own systems engineering for defined parts of the Robotaxi architecture, including vehicle and ADS interfaces, remote-assistance boundaries, and fleet or cloud integration.
  • Translate use cases, operational concepts, and constraints into system requirements, interfaces, assumptions, trade studies, and verification-ready specifications.
  • Work directly with OEM, Tier1, and Robotaxi operator partners to define system and product boundaries and lead technical working sessions.
  • Apply the reference architecture to vehicle programs covering sensors, compute, ECU topology, vehicle interfaces, and degraded-operation behavior.
  • Support implementation through architecture reviews, bring-up planning, issue triage, debugging, and design-change impact analysis.
  • Escalate cross-domain and cross-program trade-offs to the lead Robotaxi System Architect and relevant domain owners.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience designing, integrating, or deploying a Robotaxi or production-intent L4 driver-out autonomous system.
  • Systems engineering experience across vehicle platforms, sensors, compute, embedded software, ADS, safety mechanisms, remote assistance, fleet or cloud systems, and operations.
  • Experience converting use cases and operational concepts into functional decomposition, requirements, interfaces, assumptions, trade studies, and verification intent.
  • Experience defining system and product boundaries across multiple organizations, such as autonomy developers, OEMs, Tier1s, operators, or technology partners.
  • Practical vehicle or robotic-system integration experience, including architecture reviews, bring-up, issue triage, debugging, and design-change impact analysis.
  • Working knowledge of driver-out safety concepts including redundancy, degraded operation, Minimum Risk Manoeuvre, fail-operational behavior, functional safety, SOTIF, and safety-case evidence.

Nice to have

  • Robotaxi launch readiness, fleet operations, remote assistance, teleoperation interfaces, depot operations, rider systems, or operational monitoring.
  • Production automotive E/E architecture, CAN, Automotive Ethernet, SOME/IP, AUTOSAR, DDS, QNX, Linux, diagnostics, time synchronization, or data logging.
  • Sensor and compute architecture involving cameras, radar, LiDAR, IMU/GNSS, calibration, timestamping, primary or secondary compute, and redundancy.
  • Requirements and architecture tooling such as Jama, MBSE/SysML, interface-control documents, decision records, and traceability systems.
  • Experience applying one reference architecture across multiple vehicle platforms, OEMs, or deployment models, plus familiarity with AI/ML-based driving systems.
