TL;DR
Staff Functional Safety Systems Engineer (Automotive Autonomy): Building the functional safety case and software safety architecture for a hands-free L3 ADAS platform with an accent on ISO 26262, ASIL D certification, and systematic safety analysis. Focus on developing safety monitors for high-performance SoCs, maintaining traceability across system and software requirements, and leading safety reviews for autonomous vehicle systems.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA; Palo Alto, CA; or Detroit, MI. Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States.

Base salary in California: $191,920–$287,880 USD annually, plus eligibility for annual bonuses, equity compensation, and company benefits.

hirify.global, a Ford Motor Company subsidiary, develops in-house hands-free ADAS and autonomous driving technology for Ford vehicles.

What you will do

  • Own and formalize the safety case framework, supporting processes, documentation, and organizational tracking.
  • Develop technical content for functional and non-functional safety case claims and evidence.
  • Perform HARA, FMEA, FTA, DFA, and other systematic functional safety analyses.
  • Lead software safety architecture development for safety monitors and runtime systems on high-performance SoCs.
  • Drive traceability between system requirements, architecture, software safety specifications, and implementation across engineering teams.
  • Lead internal and external safety committee reviews and collaborate with software, systems, testing, security, machine learning, and robotics teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience; equivalent advanced-degree experience is accepted.
  • Strong systems engineering fundamentals and the ability to understand complex systems and perform systematic software analysis.
  • Practical experience with FMEA, FTA, DFA, attack tree analysis, or similar methods.
  • Knowledge of automotive functional safety standards, including ISO 26262, and experience with safety-critical software development processes.
  • Expertise delivering ASIL D-certified products and applying the safety lifecycle to product development.
  • Strong safety leadership, engineering communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Functional safety experience with autonomous vehicles or high-performance computing.
  • Experience with ISO 21448, ISO 8800, ISO 5469, or other advanced safety standards for AI components.
  • Experience with qualified toolchains, requirements traceability, documentation, configuration, and change management systems.
  • Knowledge of Automotive SPICE or CMMI software quality processes.
