Manager, Technical Writing (Defense)

Location: East Syracuse, New York, United States; travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.

Salary: $132,000–$171,600 per year.

What you will do

• Lead, manage, mentor, recruit, and develop technical writers, editors, documentation specialists, and publications professionals.
• Set team objectives, staffing plans, schedules, priorities, and resource requirements across multiple technical writing groups.
• Develop and maintain documentation processes, procedures, standards, templates, style guides, and quality criteria.
• Direct the development, review, validation, release, and maintenance of complex technical documentation.
• Resolve complex documentation and operational issues using advanced technical writing expertise and professional judgment.
• Collaborate with engineering, systems engineering, program management, product management, quality, manufacturing, training, technical support, and customers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with 10+ years of related experience, or a master’s degree with 8+ years, a PhD with 5+ years, or an equivalent combination.
• Previous experience leading or managing technical writing, technical publications, documentation, or related professional teams.
• Advanced knowledge of technical writing, documentation development, content management, document control, configuration management, and change management.
• Experience managing concurrent documentation projects, resources, schedules, priorities, processes, and quality metrics.
• Strong people leadership, coaching, workforce planning, communication, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Must be a U.S. citizen and currently hold or be able to obtain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance.

Nice to have

• Experience with defense, aerospace, radar, command and control, communications, electronic warfare, or complex military systems.
• Experience with structured authoring, XML, DITA, content management systems, single-source publishing, or documentation automation.
• Experience with project management, budgeting, forecasting, requirements management, systems engineering, or technical data management.
• PMP, CPTC, or similar certification; Lean Six Sigma or process improvement experience.
• Experience with tools such as MadCap Central, Adobe FrameMaker, Arbortext, Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, SolidWorks, and related documentation platforms.
