Staff Database Administrator (PostgreSQL)

Location: Hybrid, with three days per week onsite in Culver City, CA or San Francisco, CA

Salary: $181,000–$265,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Own the production PostgreSQL estate across multi-terabyte Aurora clusters, including capacity, performance, availability, and cost.
• Lead multi-region disaster recovery, including replication monitoring, failover and failback procedures, backup validation, and recovery drills.
• Segment shared databases into dedicated domain clusters and design scalable partitioning, sharding, read-replica, pooling, and aggregation strategies.
• Plan and execute major-version upgrades with minimal downtime while keeping replication and recovery capabilities current.
• Own change data capture and data movement using Debezium, Kafka/MSK, and AWS DMS, including parallelized replication pipelines.
• Improve schema-change governance, security controls, incident response, observability, automation, and database engineering practices across the organization.

Requirements

• 8+ years operating production relational databases at scale, preferably in financial services, fintech, or SaaS.
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise, including query optimization, indexing, partitioning, vacuum and bloat management, locking, concurrency, replication, and connection management.
• Hands-on experience with multi-terabyte Aurora or RDS environments, major-version upgrades, blue/green cutovers, and storage and parameter tuning.
• Experience designing multi-region disaster recovery and defining RTO and RPO targets.
• Experience with CDC and data movement technologies such as Debezium, Kafka, or AWS DMS.
• Experience with Terraform, CI/CD, Kubernetes, schema migration tooling, and database observability.

Nice to have

• AI and Claude best practices or experience building agentic database automation.
• Experience with database segmentation, sharding, large-scale migrations, or platform integrations.
• Operational experience with MySQL, Snowflake, Redis, OpenSearch, Kafka, or Amazon MSK.
• Familiarity with SOC 1, SOC 2, brokerage, clearing, custody, or other regulated financial systems.
