Mechanical Designer - Co-op/Intern (Optical/Photonic Systems)

Location: Onsite in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Four-month co-op term preferred from January 2027 to April 2027.

Pay range: CAD $24–35 per hour.

What you will do

• Participate in the development of precision production tooling for optical communication products.
• Prepare detailed part and assembly drawings using 3D solid CAD tools such as Solid Edge or SolidWorks.
• Apply mechanical engineering and manufacturing principles to develop solutions and assess alternative concepts.
• Compile design requirements, evaluate concepts, deliver documentation, and assess the performance of completed designs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary R&D colleagues to balance performance, manufacturability, and cost.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution and studying in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of a Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree.
• Proficiency in producing part and assembly drawings compliant with ANSI drafting standards.
• Proficiency with a 3D solid modeling mechanical CAD tool, such as SolidWorks or Solid Edge.
• Knowledge of metal machining, machined-part design, engineering materials, and structural mechanics.
• Strong design judgment, engineering skills, and attention to detail.
• Eligibility to complete a background check is required.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing practices.
• Experience with engineering document management and Product Lifecycle Management systems.
• Knowledge of sheet metal, injection-molded plastics, electronic and optical assemblies, and Design for Manufacturability.
• Exposure to opto-mechanical product design, electronics packaging, Finite Element Methods, or Computational Fluid Dynamics.
