TL;DR
Software Engineer, Robotics (PLCs/C++/Python): Developing and commissioning control software for automated machinery and robotic systems with an accent on PLC programming, motion and I/O integration, and hardware-adjacent debugging. Focus on integrating sensors and actuators, testing physical machines, and ensuring safe and reliable real-time operation in a laboratory environment.

Location: Boston office in Charlestown, Massachusetts; minimum 4 days per week onsite, with additional office days as project demands

Salary: $139,500–$145,500 annually for Massachusetts

What you will do

  • Write, test, and debug control software for automated systems using PLCs, Structured Text, C++, C, and Python.
  • Integrate pneumatic and motion-controlled sensors and actuators into robotic systems.
  • Commission motion and I/O systems and support controls solutions throughout their life cycle.
  • Test and debug physical machinery in the lab for safe, reliable operation.
  • Document machine specifications and operating procedures.
  • Support the Electrical Controls team with control-system schematics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 1–3 years of experience in software engineering or a related field.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and patience when debugging real-time interactions between software and hardware.
  • Familiarity with an automation language such as IEC 61131-3 Structured Text, or with C, C++, or Python for hardware interfacing.
  • Interest in working directly with physical hardware, motors, robotics, and active machinery.
  • Ability to work in the Boston office at least four days per week.

Nice to have

  • Academic projects, extracurricular activities such as FIRST Robotics, or internships involving robotics, industrial automation, or mechatronic systems.
  • Exposure to B&R Industrial Automation software, including Automation Studio, and related hardware.
