TL;DR
User Experience and Interface Design Intern (UX/UI): Refining design systems, Figma designs, prototypes, and visual deliverables for mission-critical defense software with an accent on human-centered design, stakeholder collaboration, and user advocacy. Focus on documenting component use cases, iterating designs from feedback, creating illustrations and iconography, and integrating iterative design into agile development.
Location: Hybrid position based in Arlington, Virginia, requiring at least 2–3 days in the office
Salary: $28–$34 per hour

What you will do
- Contribute to design system components and patterns, and document their use cases.
- Update and annotate Figma designs based on stakeholder feedback and discovery.
- Develop and revise prototypes, illustrations, pictograms, and iconography.
- Collaborate on user-centered solutions, gather supporting data, and engage stakeholders to reduce design risks.
- Participate in design and delivery reviews and integrate iterative design into the agile development cycle.
- Advocate for user needs and apply lessons learned to future designs.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or postgraduate program in HCI, interaction design, fine, visual or media arts, graphic design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience with relevant coursework or certification.
- Experience with digital design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with Figma, Sketch, Miro, or Mural is relevant.
- Coursework, experience, or knowledge in human-centered design thinking, heuristics, and design patterns.
- Experience with or understanding of HTML and CSS or interactive digital products.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance.
- Strong creativity, initiative, reliability, teamwork, collaboration, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
Nice to have
- Portfolio of design or development work, especially for interactive products.
- Experience with interaction design, affinity or empathy mapping, workflow diagrams, or design thinking demonstrations.
- Experience with Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
- Experience or knowledge of Agile methodologies, especially Lean.
- Familiarity with UX and interaction design publications and industry resources.
