Senior Backend Engineer (AI), UK

What you will do

• Design, implement, and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Choose appropriate architectures across modular monoliths, shared components, and independently operated services.
• Define and improve standards for code quality, maintainability, testing, APIs, security, availability, and operational readiness.
• Diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues at scale, participate in incident response, and take technical ownership.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and design reviews.
• Build, evaluate, and promote responsible agentic AI systems in production engineering workflows.

Requirements

• Strong backend architecture, API, data-systems, and performance-tuning expertise.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and a deep understanding of systems programming.
• Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Experience leading through technical judgment, influence, and clear written communication in an asynchronous environment.
• Proven production experience with agentic systems, including tool use, architectural loops, and reliability-focused error handling.
• Must be based in the United Kingdom for this remote role.

Nice to have

• Experience with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, or profiling.
• Containerized production operations, such as Kubernetes.
• Database performance expertise with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution, or partitioning.
• Experience with large-scale modular monoliths, event-driven systems, open-source maintenance, or developer-focused SaaS.
