Senior Search Backend Engineer (Elasticsearch)

Location: Hybrid, with three days per week in the Munich, Berlin, London, or Valencia office

What you will do

• Design and implement search functionality in a PaaS ecommerce backend using Scala.
• Develop search libraries based on ElasticSearch and MongoDB.
• Build and maintain scalable infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture.
• Test components for usability, functionality, and performance.
• Collaborate with Product Management and DevOps on search capabilities and infrastructure improvements.
• Participate in on-call rotations for production systems with a globally distributed team.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience with JVM languages and server-side systems.
• Search-related experience, preferably with ElasticSearch.
• Strong DevOps mindset and experience improving infrastructure.
• Experience with REST APIs, scalable architectures, parallel and asynchronous programming, and non-blocking I/O.
• Knowledge of sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
• Fluent English required for work in international teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with Scala or other functional programming languages.
• Experience with scalable event-driven architectures, queues, and notification topics.
• Experience with Helm, Kubernetes, Rust, or infrastructure development.
• Curiosity about using AI tools to work more effectively.
