Staff Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: Remote in Canada or the United States

Salary: $152,800–$259,200 USD per year for United States residents

What you will do

• Lead large, cross-team backend initiatives and remove systemic bottlenecks across product and infrastructure groups.
• Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture while modernizing monolithic and legacy systems.
• Define standards for APIs, contracts, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, and production readiness.
• Establish patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, service maturity, Go services, Kubernetes operations, and Rust adoption.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, using production findings to improve architecture and operations.
• Mentor engineers, influence technical direction, and lead adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows with appropriate quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails.

Requirements

• Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad product area.
• Deep backend architecture and production experience with complex applications, services, platforms, APIs, data systems, or modular monoliths.
• Experience modernizing monolithic or legacy backend architecture in production using modular architecture patterns.
• Ability to create alignment through clear written proposals and decision records without relying on formal authority.
• Experience balancing customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
• Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, including evaluating and improving team adoption.

Nice to have

• Experience with Go services and APIs at scale, Kubernetes, cloud-native operations, or Rust.
• Ruby/Rails modularization, large-monolith modernization, PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems.
• Security-sensitive product or software supply chain engineering experience.
• Experience with SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment constraints.
