TL;DR
Sensor Hardware Test Intern (Robotics): Characterizing and validating cameras, lidar, and supporting sensor hardware for autonomous excavators with an accent on test fixtures, structured lab campaigns, and field deployment. Focus on automating data collection, debugging electrical and mechanical test setups, and turning sensor data into hardware selection and system design decisions.

Location: San Francisco, CA; hybrid work with required time on-site at a field test location and around active construction equipment

Company

hirify.global develops autonomous systems for heavy construction equipment and deploys them on real-world infrastructure projects.

What you will do

  • Build and iterate on mechanical mounts, wiring harnesses, DAQ integrations, and benchtop test fixtures for cameras, lidar, and other sensors.
  • Run structured laboratory sensor test campaigns and capture repeatable, well-documented data.
  • Deploy instrumentation and support live field tests on active autonomous construction equipment.
  • Develop Python tools to automate data collection, process raw sensor logs, and evaluate pass/fail criteria.
  • Scope and select test equipment, while supporting electrical and mechanical debugging of test hardware.
  • Document test methods and results, and present conclusions that inform sensor selection and system design.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, optics, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience building or testing hardware through coursework, personal projects, or an internship.
  • Working proficiency in Python for data processing, scripting, or automation.
  • Comfort with basic laboratory equipment and electrical debugging, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and DAQ systems.
  • Willingness to work outdoors, around active construction equipment, and on-site at the field test location.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear technical documentation.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to cameras, lidar, radar, or other sensing hardware.
  • Experience with CAD tools for mechanical fixture design.
  • Familiarity with Git and shared codebases.
  • Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or controls.

Culture & Benefits

  • Hands-on work connecting autonomous algorithms with physical construction equipment.
  • Collaboration with construction specialists and engineering teams.
  • Opportunity to own an end-to-end sensor hardware testing project.
  • Work spans laboratory environments and live construction field sites.
