Contract Principal Software Engineer

Location: Atlanta, GA, United States; People Before Place Hybrid model

Minimum base compensation: $95 per hour

What you will do

• Design and implement scalable, cost-effective, resilient software solutions and distributed systems.
• Set standards for codebase health, software development practices, delivery platforms, and infrastructure.
• Translate customer needs and strategic direction into roadmaps, projects, and simplified technical solutions.
• Coordinate across the organization, advise stakeholders, and influence product and technology decisions.
• Lead multiple project teams, solve complex problems, anticipate risks, and drive organization-level improvements.
• Mentor engineers and technical leaders while developing career paths and fostering continuous learning.

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend development experience and deep expertise in at least one backend programming language.
• Experience architecting and delivering production-grade distributed systems across diverse technical stacks and architectures.
• Expertise in backend architecture, service design, delivery, integration, technical trade-offs, and scalable system design.
• Experience with GitHub, AWS, Argo, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code using AWS CDK, Terraform, or equivalent tools.
• Working knowledge of AI-assisted engineering tools, agent orchestration, spec-driven development, and agentic development practices.
• Computer Science degree, related degree, or equivalent practical experience building and leading complex software systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with Claude Code, OpenCode, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, Langfuse, or similar tools.
• Curiosity and initiative in evaluating emerging agentic development patterns.
