TL;DR
Power System Modelling Engineer (Renewable Energy): Validating and tuning models and controls for wind, solar, energy storage, and other generation plants, with an accent on power system simulations, NERC compliance, and generator protection. Focus on developing test plans, conducting onsite model validation, analyzing system stability, preparing engineering reports, and troubleshooting control and communication systems.

Location: Surrey, BC, Canada. Remote work is acceptable when deliverables meet expectations; the role also requires global travel to industrial and power generation sites for onsite testing and eligibility to work and travel in the US.

Annual salary: CAD 119,000–148,000, depending on assessed job level and qualifications.

What you will do

  • Validate and tune models and controls for thermal, wind, solar, and energy storage generation plants.
  • Review plant documentation and prepare unit-specific testing plans.
  • Conduct power system simulations and compliance studies aligned with NERC and other reliability standards.
  • Perform onsite generator model validation, commissioning, field testing, data collection, and troubleshooting.
  • Prepare engineering reports, conduct peer reviews, and communicate analysis and findings.
  • Develop technical proposals with project scopes, cost estimates, and schedules while collaborating with clients and internal stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a strong preference for Power Systems, or a bachelor’s degree with directly relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in transient stability studies, protection and control, or related postgraduate research.
  • Professional Engineer registration with EGBC or another jurisdiction; internationally trained engineers may be considered if eligible for EGBC registration.
  • Strong knowledge of generator and renewable modelling, power system and substation protection, and synchronous generator, renewable, and FACTS control systems.
  • Experience with power flow, dynamic, and short-circuit analysis using tools such as PSCAD, DSATools, PSS/E, PSLF, ASPEN, or ETAP.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence or equivalent, with eligibility and willingness to work and travel in the US.

Nice to have

  • Experience with site commissioning and testing, digital data acquisition systems, control equipment troubleshooting, communication troubleshooting, and safety procedures.
  • Experience with generator and plant protection and control equipment from SEL, Beckwith, GE Multilin, or similar vendors.
