TL;DR
Legal Counsel (Higher Education/Legal Services): Providing legal advice to a university and its subsidiaries by drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial, research, academic collaboration and data-sharing agreements with an accent on regulatory compliance, procurement, intellectual property and contentious matters. Focus on advising on Office for Students and Competition and Markets Authority requirements, managing outsourced litigation, and supporting student appeals and complaints.
Location: Hybrid, contractually aligned to the Milton Keynes office; office attendance is expected on average at least once per week.
Salary: £47,389–£56,535 per year

What you will do
- Draft, review and negotiate standard and bespoke agreements covering goods and services, consultancy, research funding, academic collaborations, distance delivery and data sharing.
- Research legal, compliance and governance issues and support implementation of resulting actions.
- Advise on contentious matters and disputes, draft related documents and manage outsourced litigation.
- Advise on Office for Students requirements, Competition and Markets Authority requirements and consumer protection duties.
- Provide advice on intellectual property, including copyright, trademarks and internet domain rights.
- Support procurement activities, student appeals and complaints by advising on legal requirements and drafting relevant documents.
Requirements
- Qualified solicitor or equivalent with at least two years of post-qualification experience.
- Strong written and oral communication skills for contracts, reports, letters and professional advice.
- Ability to maintain high-quality work under time pressure, prioritise workload and adapt to changing demands.
- Ability to understand internal client needs and tailor legal advice accordingly.
- Ability to work in a higher education environment and commitment to modern university values.
- Competence in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with openness to evolving workplace technology.
Nice to have
- Experience in higher education, charity or another complex regulated organisation.
- Experience with governance, compliance, policies and regulations.
- Knowledge of public procurement legislation, particularly the Procurement Act 2023.
