Electrical Engineer (FPGA/Beam Diagnostics)

Location: Onsite in Upton, New York, United States. Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

What you will do

• Maintain, upgrade, test, and provide engineering support for accelerator beam position monitors and other beam diagnostics instrumentation.
• Develop and support FPGA firmware, software, hardware, and diagnostic subsystem projects.
• Debug, repair, and maintain existing electronics and identify failure modes and corrective actions.
• Collaborate with technicians, engineers, scientists, software programmers, and technical experts across groups.
• Plan engineering work for scheduled maintenance and accelerator shutdown activities.
• Support safe operation of accelerator systems, including off-hours response for 24/7 facility operations.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 3–5 years of experience designing, fabricating, integrating, and implementing electronic systems.
• Experience with FPGA firmware development using VHDL or Verilog.
• Knowledge of at least one higher-level programming language, such as Python, C++, or MATLAB.
• Working knowledge of digital and analog circuit design, test and measurement equipment, schematics, and hands-on troubleshooting.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States and ability to obtain and maintain a DOE UPIV credential.

Nice to have

• Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and experience with Xilinx, Altera, FPGA IP cores, or Xilinx ZYNQ.
• Experience with PLC-based subsystems, PCB and schematic design tools, LabVIEW, Linux, revision control, EPICS, or CS-Studio/Phoebus.
• Knowledge of fiber-optic transceivers, RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, or GPIB communication.
