TL;DR
Marine Associate Researcher/Researcher (Maritime Decarbonization): Conducting research on EU and IMO policies, maritime energy use, emissions, and alternative fuels with an accent on quantitative analysis, policy development, and climate and health impact assessment. Focus on analyzing shipping data, comparing decarbonization policies, communicating technical findings to decision-makers, and collaborating with governments and NGOs.

Location: Germany, France, Sweden, or Ireland, with at least the first 6 months in the Berlin, Germany office and regular Berlin office visits thereafter

Salary: EUR 70,000 annual starting salary for Associate Researcher or EUR 84,000 for Researcher, depending on level and experience.

What you will do

  • Research European Union and International Maritime Organization goals and policies for decarbonizing maritime shipping.
  • Analyze energy use and emissions from domestic and international shipping.
  • Compare policy alternatives and develop recommendations to decarbonize shipping and reduce air pollution.
  • Write publications for technical and non-technical audiences and present findings internally and externally.
  • Organize briefings, meetings, and workshops and collaborate with governments, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
  • Review work produced by colleagues and consultants; at Researcher level, sometimes lead research projects.

Requirements

  • Associate Researcher: bachelor’s degree or higher; Researcher: master’s degree or higher in engineering, transportation, economics, environmental science, public policy, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with environmental and energy challenges in maritime shipping.
  • Exceptional quantitative, analytical, and research skills, including the ability to interpret technical information and draw policy-relevant conclusions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with international colleagues and travel occasionally within the EU and internationally.

Nice to have

  • Big data analysis or econometric modeling experience.
  • Advanced MS Office skills, especially Excel.
  • Strong programming experience in Python or a similar language.
  • Fluency in German.
