Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Riga, Latvia; hybrid flexibility with office and work-from-home options, plus up to three months per year working from another country.

Salary: €5,280–€5,840 per month

What you will do

• Deliver backend features end-to-end, from API design to integrations with internal systems, external providers, and partners.
• Design and implement services in a microservices and event-driven architecture with clear domain ownership.
• Build clean, maintainable, well-tested services using modern Java and Spring Boot.
• Develop and maintain APIs used by other engineering teams.
• Improve system reliability, performance, observability, and developer experience.
• Collaborate with engineers, product designers, and product managers in cross-functional teams.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building scalable backend services with modern Java 11+, Spring Boot, and related tools.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, message brokers such as RabbitMQ, and service boundaries.
• Solid SQL skills and experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
• Experience with CI/CD, Docker, Git, and containerized deployment practices.
• Test-driven mindset, production ownership, and experience working in agile cross-functional teams.
• Good written English is required for collaboration in international teams.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, banking, accounting, or other regulated domains.
• Experience building RESTful APIs and internal platform services.
• Experience with event-driven architecture or event sourcing.
