What you will do
- Support steady-state load flow, contingency, voltage performance, dynamic stability, and transient stability studies for the Colorado transmission system.
- Develop, update, and validate transmission network models using PSS®E, PSLF, TARA, DSATools, and PSCAD.
- Evaluate system performance under faults, stressed conditions, renewable integration scenarios, and large-load interconnections.
- Analyze results and prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for planning and operational decisions.
- Collaborate with transmission planning, operations, protection, modeling, and engineering groups.
- Contribute to grid modernization, DOE initiatives, advanced transmission technology, and long-term expansion projects.
Requirements
- Current senior-level student or higher, enrolled at an ABET-accredited college or university.
- Pursuing Electrical Engineering, with at least one power systems course; graduate students pursuing an MS or PhD in power systems are preferred.
- Undergraduate candidates must complete an accredited power systems course; graduate candidates must focus on power systems, dynamics, renewable integration, power electronics, or a related discipline.
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during summer and up to 20 hours per week during the school year, with in-person commuting to Denver.
- Knowledge of power flow, transmission systems, voltage control, stability, protection, or grid operations.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, written, verbal, and collaborative engineering skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with PSS®E, PSLF, PSCAD, MATLAB, Python, PowerWorld, DSATools, or similar tools.
- Interest in renewable energy integration, large-load planning, EMT analysis, advanced transmission technologies, and grid modernization.
- Interest in applied research, DOE initiatives, technical white papers, and conference publications for IEEE, CIGRE, or ESIG.
