TL;DR
Principal Engineer - Transmission Planning (Power Systems): Leading reliability and economic transmission studies, analyzing complex transmission systems, and communicating engineering recommendations with an accent on power flow, stability, short-circuit, voltage, thermal, and transfer-limit assessments. Focus on developing planning methodologies, applying NERC and NPCC standards, using PSS/E, TARA, and ASPEN, and mentoring engineers on complex projects.

Location: Office-based in Augusta, Maine or Portland, Maine, United States. The role includes transmission and substation site inspections and regional industry activities.

Salary: $128,000–$160,000 annual base salary, dependent on experience and location.

What you will do

  • Lead reliability- and economically driven transmission planning studies, including voltage, thermal, photovoltaic, transfer-limit, short-circuit, and stability assessments.
  • Analyze complex transmission systems across multiple voltage levels and communicate findings through documentation, reports, and presentations.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex, business-wide projects and guide department engineers.
  • Develop planning improvements that increase the precision and efficiency of transmission analysis.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, regional organizations, and industry peers, including NPCC and ISO groups.
  • Mentor engineers, participate in site inspections and industry events, and work independently with limited supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required; advanced degrees or certifications such as an MSEE or PE are additionally considered.
  • 10+ years of industry-related engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of transmission planning, operations, engineering design, analytics, modeling, calculations, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience with power system studies, including power flow, stability, and short-circuit analysis.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards, including NERC, NPCC, ISO, and PUC requirements.
  • Proficiency with power system analytics software such as PSS/E, TARA, ASPEN, and Enfuzion.
