Staff Software Engineer - Experiments Platform (AU remote)

Location: Remote within Australia; office and coworking options are available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

What you will do

• Provide senior technical leadership for the backend systems supporting Canva's experimentation programme.
• Evolve platform capabilities for configuring experiments, targeting users, exposing variants, and measuring outcomes.
• Improve experimentation safety by surfacing signals faster and alerting teams when guardrails or application performance are affected.
• Work with engineering, data science, product teams, and senior technical leaders to shape the platform roadmap.
• Explore AI-assisted automation of experimentation analysis to help teams learn and iterate faster.
• Drive adoption by building trusted internal platforms that other engineering teams depend on.

Requirements

• Experience building backend systems or platforms used by other engineers in critical paths.
• Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems in a large engineering environment.
• Ability to form technical direction for ambiguous engineering problems and guide other engineers toward outcomes.
• Strong fundamentals in backend and distributed systems, including scalability, availability, consistency, reliability, and failure modes.
• Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.
• Understanding of experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout; Java is the primary language but is not mandatory.

Nice to have

• Experience designing experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management, or rollout infrastructure.
• Background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering.
• Experience building feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems.
• Statistical intuition and the ability to work closely with data scientists.
