Location: San Diego, California, United States. The position is onsite and requires in-person work-related events, training, and meetings. A flexible arrangement may be available for roles conducive to remote work, allowing up to two remote days per week. Domestic and international travel of up to 10% may be required.
Salary: $109,200–$150,150 base annual salary.

What you will do
- Provide materials engineering leadership for material selection, compatibility, characterization, and reliability across the product development lifecycle.
- Evaluate metals, specialty alloys, and refractory materials in high-temperature, vacuum, plasma, and contamination-sensitive environments.
- Perform materials testing, metallography, microstructure analysis, and surface evaluation using techniques such as SEM, EDS/EDX, XPS, and AFM.
- Lead or support failure analysis and root-cause investigations, connecting material behavior with system-level performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with design engineers, scientists, suppliers, and quality teams on technical decisions, design reviews, and project deliverables.
- Document and present technical findings, recommendations, and mitigation strategies to engineering teams, management, and suppliers.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nano Engineering, or a related field; a master’s degree or PhD is preferred.
- At least 5 years of relevant Materials Engineering experience.
- Strong knowledge of engineering metals, specialty alloys, refractory materials, material compatibility, and reliability.
- Experience with material characterization, microstructural analysis, surface evaluation, failure analysis, root-cause investigations, and reliability improvement.
- Hands-on experience with SEM, EDS/EDX, XPS, AFM, or similar analytical technologies.
- Must be legally authorized to access controlled technology under United States export regulations before beginning work.
Nice to have
- Experience in semiconductor, high-tech manufacturing, or other advanced technology environments.
- Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant engineering or materials discipline.
