EMC Compliance Engineer (Medical Devices)

Base salary: $103,000–$191,000 USD per year, plus equity compensation for full-time employees.

What you will do

• Own EMC compliance strategy, test planning, execution, debugging, and documentation for implantable electronics, surgical robotics, wireless charging systems, and manufacturing equipment.
• Identify EMC risks with hardware, firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams and drive grounding, shielding, filtering, isolation, and PCB design mitigations.
• Develop internal EMC test capabilities, including fixtures, measurement methods, equipment qualification, and test processes.
• Plan and execute pre-compliance and formal testing for emissions, immunity, ESD, EFT, surge, voltage dips, interruptions, and wireless coexistence.
• Debug failures using laboratory instrumentation, perform root-cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
• Coordinate with external certification laboratories and regulatory bodies and contribute EMC data to IDE, PMA, and related submissions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 3+ years of hands-on EMC, EMI, ESD, RF, and electrical compliance experience with complex electronic systems.
• Strong bench-debugging skills with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, probes, LISNs, VNAs, RF equipment, ESD simulators, and data-acquisition tools.
• Practical knowledge of grounding, shielding, filtering, isolation, ESD protection, PCB layouts and stackups, return-current control, power integrity, and emissions.
• Experience planning, executing, debugging, and documenting EMC tests, including working knowledge of IEC 60601-1-2, FCC Part 18, and IEC 61000-series tests.
• Ability to drive cross-functional issues to closure across engineering, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and external test laboratories.

Nice to have

• Experience with medical devices, implants, surgical robotics, wireless power transfer, or regulated wireless systems such as BLE, Wi-Fi, 5G, or UWB.
• Experience with third-party certification laboratories, ISO/IEC 17025, medical-device design controls, ISO 14971, and regulatory submissions.
• Knowledge of international EMC and RF requirements, CISPR standards, MR testing, and ISO/TS 10974.
• Experience developing EMC design guidelines, training programs, compliance workflows, or manufacturing ESD-control programs.
