Sr Engineer Design Electrical (Medical Devices)

Location: Northfield, Illinois, United States

Salary: $101,000–$152,000 annual; bonus and/or incentive eligible.

What you will do

• Lead electrical and system-level design for complex medical devices, including architecture, requirements decomposition, and interface control across hardware, firmware, and software.
• Develop electrical schematics, PCB layouts, prototypes, and technical documentation using Altium Design or equivalent ECAD tools.
• Drive design transfer from R&D to manufacturing through validation builds, process development, troubleshooting, and design-for-manufacturability activities.
• Manage system requirements and traceability across design inputs, outputs, verification, and validation.
• Lead multidisciplinary product development teams, coordinate resources and priorities, and mentor junior engineers.
• Evaluate and improve existing products through root cause analysis, risk assessment, user feedback, and post-market surveillance.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• At least 4 years of electrical and/or system-level product design experience, preferably in a regulated industry.
• Hands-on experience with schematic capture, PCB design, prototype bring-up, PCB manufacturing, and design documentation.
• Advanced proficiency with Altium Design or equivalent ECAD software.
• Experience with embedded systems, hardware-software integration, system debugging, design controls, risk management, and cross-functional development.
• Ability to travel up to 10% for domestic and international business purposes.

Nice to have

• Medical device development and launch experience, including Class II devices.
• Knowledge of medical electrical safety, EMC, and compliance standards including IEC 60601, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, and ISO 13485.
• Experience with embedded firmware or software architecture, manufacturing scale-up, and sustaining engineering.
• Experience contributing to cross-disciplinary system architectures and preparing regulatory documentation such as DHF, DMR, and traceability matrices.
