TL;DR
Sr. EMC Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and validating electromagnetic compatibility for spacecraft avionics and lunar rover electro-mechanical systems with an accent on EMI/EMC requirements, in-space charging effects, grounding, shielding, and signal and power integrity. Focus on troubleshooting EMI from board to system level, automating RF and electronics testing, and supporting flight hardware qualification and spacecraft integration.

Location: Hybrid in Hawthorne, California, United States

Salary: $155,000–$200,000 per year

What you will do

  • Capture avionics requirements, lead EMI/EMC design trades, and integrate designs into rover systems.
  • Define electromagnetic environmental, operational, and survivability criteria from system to component level.
  • Analyze grounding, bonding, isolation, shielding, emissions, susceptibility, transient protection, RF compatibility, and signal and power integrity.
  • Troubleshoot EMI issues from board to system level and operate and automate EMI, RF, and electronics test equipment.
  • Create technical documentation including schematics, system diagrams, interface documents, procedures, build orders, and test and anomaly reports.
  • Support flight hardware qualification, spacecraft integration testing, production issue resolution, and spacecraft risk management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field.
  • 5+ years of experience with EMI/EMC requirements, analysis, design, and testing for spacecraft systems or avionics components; academic and personal projects may apply.
  • Experience with LTSpice and circuit analysis using SPICE or equivalent simulation tools.
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and logic analyzers.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, BOMs, cable harnesses, interface diagrams, and mechanical drawings.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with SMC-S-016 testing requirements and MIL-STD-461 EMC testing.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety and commercial EMC compliance standards.
  • Experience designing high-power spacecraft avionics, regulators, converters, power-line filters, and high-voltage grounding schemes.
  • Experience designing BLDC and PMSM motor controller systems.
  • Experience with CAD software.
