Senior Machine Learning Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; expected to work from the office 3+ days per week. Relocation to a hirify.global hub location may be supported. Hub locations include Denver, San Francisco, Nashville, and Santiago.

Salary: $207,000–$244,000 USD annually for San Francisco, CA.

What you will do

• Design, develop, deploy, monitor, and test production ML models and AI services.
• Build document processing, charge classification, entity resolution, and in-product intelligence systems.
• Use LLM APIs, classical models, fine-tuning, and rules while balancing cost, latency, and quality.
• Write clean production software with APIs, abstractions, error handling, testing, and CI/CD.
• Partner with Product Engineering and Product to translate business problems into ML solutions and define API contracts.
• Build evaluation frameworks, automate pipelines, and contribute agentic workflows and reusable context to the AI platform.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• 6+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years building production ML systems.
• Strong Python skills and the ability to write clean, testable, well-structured object-oriented code.
• Production experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, structured outputs, function calling, cost management, and evaluation.
• Experience building and maintaining APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and software used by other engineers.
• Comfort using AI-assisted development tools and reviewing their output critically.

Nice to have

• Experience with MLflow, SageMaker, Vertex, or similar MLOps platforms.
• Experience with document processing, OCR, information extraction, PySpark, or large-scale data processing.
• Ruby experience, familiarity with compliance-sensitive domains, or knowledge of dbt, Snowflake, and modern ELT tools.
