Senior/Staff Backend Engineer (Geothermal)

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah; hybrid position based at the headquarters

What you will do

• Develop and maintain a next-generation multi-physics well-targeting engine.
• Design and deliver reliable distributed computing systems for scientific research teams.
• Scale and improve the reliability of an existing system supporting geothermal exploration.
• Build fault-tolerant event-driven architectures and orchestration systems for large cloud workloads.
• Collaborate with geophysicists, geoscientists, seismologists, and engineers on subsurface modeling challenges.
• Share distributed systems expertise and help improve engineering practices across the team.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience in a business environment, ideally with a strong scientific component.
• Experience leading the design and implementation of distributed computing systems.
• Experience with resilient event-driven architectures, cloud workload orchestration, serverless systems, Kubernetes, or custom VM fleets.
• Experience with RDBMS, cloud blob storage, observability, logging, monitoring, alerting, and metrics.
• Knowledge of CI/CD, Git, Docker, Terraform or Pulumi, and cloud resource management in AWS or GCP.
• Fluency in Python and SQL.

Nice to have

• Experience with experiment tracking, optimization methods, applied algorithms, reinforcement learning, or other AI/ML techniques.
• Web development experience or familiarity with geoscience concepts and applications.
