Principal Mechanical Engineer, Rail + Transit

Location: New York, United States; hybrid role anchored in the New York/MTA market

Salary: $200,000–$260,000 annually

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design for HVAC, tunnel ventilation, smoke control, and supporting building systems in transit stations, tunnels, and rail facilities.
• Act as a technical authority for elevators, vertical transportation, and station accessibility systems.
• Manage design packages from concept through final design, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and engineering reports.
• Oversee airflow modeling, system sizing, and performance-based design approaches.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary solutions with architectural, structural, electrical, fire/life safety, and systems teams.
• Provide project management leadership, client interface, design review, QA/QC, and technical decision-making.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
• 15+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally in rail, transit, or complex facility environments.
• Deep expertise in HVAC and tunnel ventilation design for underground or enclosed infrastructure.
• Experience with elevator or vertical transportation design for station and facility projects.
• Knowledge of NFPA, ASHRAE, NYC Building Code, life safety requirements, and transit agency design criteria.
• Proven technical leadership, project delivery, client communication, and staff mentoring experience; a PE license is strongly preferred.
