TL;DR
Intern, Applied Technologies (Biotechnology): Supporting the design, development, testing, and implementation of laboratory automation, robotics, and digital solutions with an accent on systems engineering, experimental execution, and technical data analysis. Focus on developing automation workflows, troubleshooting robotic and laboratory systems, and evaluating reliability, throughput, usability, and scalability.

Location: Norwood, Massachusetts, United States; 70% in-office work model. The internship runs from June 7, 2027 to August 20, 2026, and applicants must be available for the entire duration. Only U.S. persons, including citizens, permanent residents, asylees, or refugees, are eligible.

Salary: $20.00–$60.00 per hour, with potential eligibility for discretionary bonus, incentive compensation, or equity awards.

What you will do

  • Contribute to a defined automation, robotics, or systems engineering project under the guidance of engineers and scientists.
  • Configure, develop, and test laboratory automation systems, robotic platforms, instruments, and related software.
  • Execute experiments, characterize systems, troubleshoot issues, and collect performance data.
  • Analyze experimental and test data and summarize findings for engineering decisions.
  • Develop or modify scripts, workflows, automation methods, and simple software tools.
  • Prepare test plans, technical documentation, diagrams, work instructions, project summaries, and final presentations.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree in engineering, computer science, bioengineering, robotics, automation, life sciences, or a related technical discipline.
  • Coursework or project experience in programming or scripting, robotics, laboratory automation, electrical or mechanical systems, systems engineering, data analysis, or biological sciences.
  • Demonstrated interest in applying engineering or digital technologies to scientific problems.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, collaboration, and technical documentation skills.
  • Must be eligible to work with U.S. export-controlled information as a U.S. person; non-U.S. persons cannot be sponsored for an export control license.

Nice to have

  • GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with automation, robotics, laboratory instruments, liquid handlers, sensors, microcontrollers, or electromechanical systems.
  • Programming experience with Python, C#, JavaScript, MATLAB, or a similar language.
  • Familiarity with CAD, Git, data visualization, or engineering analysis tools.
  • Exposure to biotechnology or pharmaceutical development, machine learning, computer vision, autonomous systems, or advanced robotics.
