Member of Technical Staff (Full-stack, Backend-Focused, Python)

Location: New York is listed in the posting; the role is on-site at the San Francisco office in Dogpatch.

Salary: $175,000–$240,000 per year plus equity.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services, APIs, and databases powering the scientific discovery platform.
• Build and extend data pipelines supporting AI agents and research workflows.
• Contribute to frontend features and workflows in collaboration with designers and frontend engineers.
• Implement monitoring, observability, and automated testing to improve reliability and uptime.
• Troubleshoot issues across the stack and ship AI-driven features with engineering, design, and research teams.

Requirements

• Typically 6+ years of software engineering experience across backend and frontend development.
• Strong proficiency in a backend language such as Python or Node; Python is required for the interview process.
• Experience designing and consuming APIs, including FastAPI and REST; GraphQL knowledge is a plus.
• Familiarity with React, Next.js, or similar frontend frameworks and modern web development practices.
• Working knowledge of relational or document databases, cloud infrastructure, Docker, version control, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Ability to work on-site at the San Francisco office.

Nice to have

• Experience with data-heavy systems, scientific tooling, or ML/AI-adjacent platforms.
• Prior experience in startups or small teams with end-to-end ownership.
• Exposure to GraphQL, Kubernetes, or additional cloud platforms.
