TL;DR
2027 National Tax Office - Emerging Tax and Tax Controversy Intern (Federal Tax): Supporting tax planning, technical research, IRS matters, and tax controversy work with an accent on federal tax law, legal writing, and emerging tax developments. Focus on drafting memoranda and ruling requests, preparing exam and appeals responses, and translating complex tax issues into practical guidance.

Location: Principally in-person across offices in Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, and Massachusetts; candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Some local, national, and occasional international travel may be required.

Salary: $33–$36.

What you will do

  • Evaluate tax planning strategies based on federal legislation, regulations, court cases, and market developments.
  • Research technical tax positions and draft memoranda, position papers, and other legal writing.
  • Support client matters involving federal tax issues and interactions with the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Prepare responses to IRS examinations, appeals, and collections matters.
  • Draft private letter ruling requests and support proactive planning for future tax positions.
  • Write internal and external tax alerts on current developments, controversy topics, and emerging planning techniques.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a JD, LLM, or master’s degree in taxation.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Strong interest in tax law, tax controversy, and emerging tax issues.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and research skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex topics and communicate conclusions clearly in writing.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, except for qualified bilingual Japanese-English or Chinese-English candidates.

Nice to have

  • Prior coursework, experience, or demonstrated interest in tax research, legal writing, or controversy matters.
